From his unwavering loyalty to Priscilla Barielle to his enigmatic past, Al's story is a captivating tale of devotion, resilience, and hidden strength. Al would lay down his life without hesitation to ensure her safety, as seen when he allegedly died a thousand times trying to dissuade her from entering Vollachia.
Their bond is unconventional, filled with moments of banter and tension. Al often bristles when Priscilla uses his full name, yet he remains steadfastly by her side, even in the direst circumstances. When separated during the Great Disaster, Al endured unimaginable pain to reunite with her, showcasing his unyielding commitment.
A Friend and Supporter of Natsuki Subaru
Al’s relationship with Subaru Natsuki is both unique and pivotal. As two Japanese natives transported to the same foreign world, they share a rare camaraderie built on cultural understanding and a mutual sense of otherness. While their relationship begins on shaky ground—mainly due to Subaru’s distrust of Al’s connection to Priscilla—it evolves into one of respect and mutual support.
Al demonstrates a remarkable ability to understand Subaru’s struggles, often offering advice and encouragement during critical moments. In Arc 9, this tension reaches a breaking point when Al traps Subaru in Ol Shamak and reveals his intention to act on a long-abandoned purpose: removing Subaru from the world. This shocking betrayal shows that while Al cares deeply for Subaru, his personal motivations and loyalties are far more complex than they appear, adding a layer of intrigue to their dynamic.
A Shrouded History
Al’s past is steeped in mystery, adding layers to his complex character. He refers to the Witch of Greed, Echidna, as his teacher, though their relationship is far from cordial. Echidna’s disappointment in Al hints at unfinished tasks and failures that continue to haunt him.
Additionally, Al’s connection to Satella, the Witch of Envy, is another enigma. His interactions with shadowy figures resembling her evoke fear and regret, suggesting a deeply personal and traumatic history. Despite these unresolved issues, Al confronts his fears when the situation demands it, demonstrating a courage that defines his character.
